Code projects: the AI writes your site
In a code project, the AI writes and changes the site's real files, checks everything before saving, and you follow along in the preview without needing to program.
What code mode is
Instead of filling in a template's fields, the AI writes the project's code: its pages, components, styling and, when needed, its database. That lets you ask for things a template doesn't cover, such as a quote calculator, a customer area or a dashboard. When there is a template, it is a starting point, not a limit.
You don't need to know how to program. The chat is the main way in; the code is there for anyone who wants to check it. A code project shows a Code tag next to its name at the top of the editor.
The editor's tabs
| Tab | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Preview | The working site, built from the current code. See Preview. |
| Plan | The project plan written in Plan mode. See Plan mode. |
| Code | The project's files, read-only, and what changed in the last change. |
| Database | The site's tables and records, when it stores data. See Database. |
| History | Every version of the code, each with Restore. |
The top bar also holds GitHub, Domain and Publish. On a phone, the tabs sit at the bottom, along with Chat.
How a change happens
You describe the request in the chat, in Build mode
The AI writes the code
The chat shows the step: writing the code, checking that it compiles, fixing what didn't pass and saving the new version.
The platform checks it
If something fails, the AI tries to fix it a few more times. A change that doesn't pass is never applied, and the credits go back.
The change becomes a version
The chat shows Applied as version N and the list of new, changed and deleted files.
Code sites use React, Vite, TypeScript and Tailwind. You don't need to know what that means, but it helps if you work with a developer or use GitHub.
Large requests and whole sites
- A request that adds several features at once (accounts, a database, dashboards, payments), creates the project's first database, rebuilds the site or changes every page counts as large: it takes 8 to 20 minutes and uses 10 credits. The chat asks first, under This is a large request.
- A long specification of a whole site is built in steps: the visual base, the components, the home page, the pages three at a time and a final review. You see the plan, the time and the credits and click Build the site. You can Pause and Continue whenever you like.
- Each small or medium request uses 3 credits. See every amount in AI chat.
Convert a template project
When the option is available, a visual-editor project can become code from the project menu, under Convert to code (beta). Converting can't be undone: from then on, the project is edited in code mode only.
Publish a code project
Click Publish at the top of the editor
Check the question Publish version N?
The published version is always the current one. Visitors see it in place of whatever was live before.
Click Publish now
The site's address appears in the Live at … notice.
If the code has a problem that blocks publishing, the list of problems appears in the same notice; ask the AI to fix it. Changes made afterwards only go live when you publish again. See Publish.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit the code by hand?
Not in the Code tab, which is read-only. To edit on your own computer, sync the project with GitHub: every push comes back as a new version.
How do I keep a copy of the code?
With GitHub sync, the code also lives in a repository of your own.
The AI answered without changing anything.
That happens when it explains something or asks a question back. The answer costs 1 credit and the rest of the request goes back to your balance. Reply in the chat to carry on.
I saw “The project changed while the AI was working on it”.
Another change was saved in the meantime, for example from another tab. Nothing was applied and the credits went back; send the request again.
Does restoring a version delete the site's data?
No. Restoring brings back the code; sign-ups, orders and other data stay as they are.
