Create and organize your projects
Every website or app is a project. Learn how to create one, find yours, rename them and how many projects your plan includes.
What a project is
A project holds everything about one website or app: its pages, copy, images, version history, address and, for code projects, its files and database. Every member of your workspace sees the same projects.
When it is created, a project gets a name (the business name shown on the site or, if there is none, the template's name) and a unique free address based on that name.
Create a project
Describe your business
In the box at the top of the Dashboard, write what you need and click Start building. If more than one template is a close match, you pick one of them or click Create from what I wrote.
Or start from a template
Under Templates in the sidebar, click Use template on the one you like. See Templates.
Or import from GitHub
If your site's code already lives in a repository, use Import from GitHub on the Dashboard when the button is available. See GitHub.
The editor opens as soon as the project is ready. A new project starts as a Draft and only becomes visible to visitors when you publish it.
How many projects your plan includes
| Plan | Active projects |
|---|---|
| Free | 1 |
| Starter | 1 |
| Pro | 3 |
| Business | 10 |
Draft and published projects both count. A deleted project stops counting right away. When you reach the limit, creating a project is refused with a notice; see Plans to change plans.
Find your projects
- The Dashboard shows your most recently edited projects, with the My projects, Published and Templates tabs and a Search projects box that looks up names.
- My projects in the sidebar lists all of them, newest first, with a thumbnail of the site, its status (Draft or Published) and the date of the last change.
- Open editor opens the project. View site appears once it is published.
Rename a project or change its subtitle
Open My projects in the sidebar
Click the … on the card
The button is called More actions.
Choose Rename
Change the name and, if you like, the Subtitle: the line under the name. Left empty, it shows the template the project started from.
Click Save
In the visual editor you can also rename from the project menu: click the name in the top-left corner and choose Rename project.
Note.Renaming doesn't change the site's address. To use a different address, connect a custom domain.
Who can do what
| Action | Who can |
|---|---|
| See and open projects | Everyone, including Viewer |
| Create and rename | Owner, Admin and Editor |
| Delete | Owner and Admin |
Frequently asked questions
Can I duplicate a project?
There is no option to duplicate or copy a project yet. To start a similar one, create a new project from the same template.
Can I move a project to another workspace?
No. Each project belongs to the workspace it was created in.
Why can't I create a project?
The most common reasons are your plan's project limit and an expired trial. The message on screen says which one. People with the Viewer role can't create projects either.
Can I change the free address later?
No. It is set when the project is created and stays the same even if you rename the project. You can connect a custom domain at any time.
